飯豊連峰

2月のよく晴れた朝、雪をまとった飯豊連峰がくっきりと見えたため、チャーターしたヘリコプターで撮影に向かいました。新潟空港を離陸してからわずか15分ほどで飯豊連峰に到着。操縦は60代のベテランパイロットでしたが、カメラを構える肘が操縦桿に当たるほど小さなロビンソン機だったので、最初は少し不安を覚えました。しかし、飛び立ってしまえば、撮影に夢中でその心配も忘れてしまいました。

この年は雪が少ない冬でしたが、上空から見下ろす飯豊連峰の主稜線にはたっぷりと雪が積もり、まさに真冬の景色が広がっていました。稜線から山形側に入った瞬間、上昇気流から下降気流に変わり、機体が一気に50メートルか100メートルほど急降下（したような気がします）。巨大な山塊の中で、ヘリコプターが木の葉のように小さく感じられる瞬間でした。

さすがに何度も旋回するのはリスクが高いと判断し、本山を中心に2周だけして帰路につきました。機会があれば、ぜひ一度新潟県内を空から眺めてみることをおすすめします。地上とは違った新潟の姿に出会えるはずです。

On a clear morning in February, the snow-covered Iide Mountains were clearly visible, so I chartered a helicopter to go take some photos. It took only about 15 minutes to reach the Iide Mountains after taking off from Niigata Airport. The pilot was a veteran in his 60s, but the Robinson helicopter was so small that my elbow hit the control stick when I held up my camera, so I felt a little uneasy at first. However, once we took off, I became so engrossed in filming that I forgot all about my initial concerns.

Although it had been a winter with little snow, the main ridge of the Iide Mountains, viewed from above, was covered in a thick layer of snow, creating a scene reminiscent of the depths of winter. As we entered the Yamagata side of the ridge, the ascending air currents suddenly turned into descending ones, causing the helicopter to plummet sharply by about 50 or 100 meters (or so it felt). In the midst of the massive mountain range, the helicopter felt as small as a leaf.

Given the risks involved, I decided it was best to limit the maneuvers to two circuits around the main peak before heading back. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend taking a flight to view Niigata Prefecture from the air. You’ll discover a side of Niigata that’s different from what you see on the ground.
