田園を覆う霧の海

5月としては珍しく霧が発生した水田。その霧が一面を包み込み、色彩や形をやわらかく統一し、山の向こうまでまるで湖のような景色が広がっていました。かつて瀬戸内の多島海に霧が立ち込めた朝、同じように高台から海を見下ろして写真を撮ったことがありますが、今回は手前に広がるのが田んぼであるという違いだけです。山々が島のように浮かび上がっています。この米山山麓の一帯は、もともと美しい地域ですが、今朝の霧に包まれた田園風景は格別の趣があります。もしかすると、今は田んぼとなっているこの地も、遥か昔には湖や海だったのかもしれません。そんな想像をかき立てられる、幻想的な「田んぼと霧の海」の光景です。

It was unusual for May, but fog had settled over the rice paddies. The fog enveloped the entire area, softening and unifying the colors and shapes, creating a landscape that stretched all the way to the mountains beyond, resembling a lake. I once took a photo from a high vantage point looking down at the sea on a morning when fog had settled over the Seto Inland Sea’s archipelago, but the only difference this time was that the rice paddies spread out in the foreground. The mountains rise up like islands. This area at the foot of the Yama Mountains is already a beautiful region, but the rural landscape shrouded in fog this morning has a particularly enchanting charm. Perhaps this land, now a rice field, was once a lake or sea in ancient times. Such imaginative thoughts are stirred by the fantastical scene of “rice fields and a sea of fog.”
