かつて新潟平野に数多く見られたハザ木も、今ではこの場所を除いてほとんど目にすることがなくなりました。昔は、こうした風景がどこにでも広がっていたのでしょう。秋の収穫後、稲を干す香りとともに、心に残る懐かしい情景です。かつては農家にとって収穫時に欠かせなかったハザ木も、今では役目を終え、ほとんど使われなくなりました。

農家の高齢化や農地の集約化が進み、農業の近代化が加速する中で、かつての風物詩や原風景が次々と姿を消していきます。こうした変化を惜しむ気持ちはありますが、過去にこだわりすぎれば、今を生きる農家や地域の人々の暮らしに支障が出るのも事実です。

それでも、越後特有の原風景のひとつが失われていくことには、やはり寂しさを感じます。今、私たちにできるのは、こうした風景をしっかりと記録に残していくことしかないのかもしれません。
