The distance from Niigata City to the Oyashirazu Coast is approximately 190 kilometers. To photograph the harsh winter coastline, I checked the weather forecast the day before and departed early the next morning. There are only a limited number of spots where photography is possible, and the only place where you can see the rugged cliffs in rough weather is along National Route 8. Although the terrain is close to the Northern Alps, the coastal area does not receive much snow even in the middle of winter.
The moment when the Oyashirazu Coast shines most beautifully—the scenery woven by wind, snow, and rough waves, truly symbolizing Oyashirazu—is rare to encounter. However, the winter Oyashirazu Coast, with its leaden sky and rough Japan Sea, is the scene I most recommend as a quintessential Japan Sea-side landscape. However, the winter Oyashirazu Coast is lonely and harsh, so there are few tourists to be seen.
