白い雲と波の外海府海岸

複眼を持っている虫などと違って人の目は二つしかありません。二つの目がある理由は距離をつかんだりするため。それぞれ別のものを見ているわけではないので基本一箇所あるいは一点しか同時に見ることができません。とくに目を凝らせば凝らすほど周りが見えなくなるのは目の悲しい機能のようにも思えます。全体像を掴むためには常に目をキョロキョロするしかありません。

写真の視点でこの風景を見た場合、いくつかの要素に分解できます。波は激しく動き、雲はゆっくり形を変えます。それに対して岩や遠くの大野亀はほとんど変化がありません。一枚の写真にする場合には激しく動くものを優先します。写真を撮るほとんどの人が意識していることだと思いますが、大きく分けると、構図を支配している要素と不確定要素の二つです。

この写真では岩や空が全体の中で少し支配的すぎるような気がします。波や雲の動きがあっても、少し窮屈な感じもします。しかしながらあまりにも気持ちの良い雲や波を、硬くて黒い岩と対比するのに咄嗟に判断して撮影したと記憶しています。

少し堅苦しい感じの写真になりましたが、構図を決めてその中に雲や波をはめ込んだように見える写真が成功だったかどうか。波を見ているときには既に構図が決まっていて、ほぼ波しか見ていません。私の目が複眼だったら、はたしてどんな写真が撮れたのでしょうか。

Unlike insects with compound eyes, humans only have two eyes. The reason we have two eyes is to judge distance. Since each eye does not see different things, we can basically only see one place or one point at a time. The more we focus our eyes, the less we can see around us, which seems to be a sad function of the eye. In order to grasp the whole picture, we have no choice but to constantly move our eyes around.

When viewing this landscape from a photographic perspective, it can be broken down into several elements. The waves move violently, and the clouds slowly change shape. In contrast, the rocks and the distant Ono-turtle remain almost unchanged. When taking a single photograph, it is important to prioritize the elements that move violently. I think most photographers are aware of this, but broadly speaking, there are two elements: those that dominate the composition and those that are uncertain.

In this photograph, the rocks and sky seem to dominate the composition a bit too much. Even though there is movement in the waves and clouds, it feels a bit cramped. However, I recall making a spontaneous decision to capture the pleasant clouds and waves in contrast to the hard, black rocks.

The photo turned out a bit stiff, but I wonder if it was successful in terms of composing the scene and fitting the clouds and waves into it. By the time I was observing the waves, the composition was already decided, and I was focusing almost exclusively on the waves. If my eyes were compound eyes, what kind of photo would I have taken?
