大洞原から妙高山

妙高山の裾野に広がる大洞原の冬は、魚沼ほど雪が多くはありません。新年1月5日、標高およそ500メートルのこの地で撮影した際、気温はマイナス8度、雪はパウダー状でした。雪面にエクボが見られるのは、まだ積雪が少ない証拠ですが、それでも約2メートルの雪が積もっていました。

妙高地域では2026年夏の着工を目指し、外資系によるリゾート開発が進行中です。バブル期に賑わった温泉街やスキー場も、現在は静かなリゾート地に戻っていますが、雪質の良さから近年は海外からの来訪者が増加。ソニー関連会社からロッテへと経営権が移ったアライマウンテンリゾートへの投資もありました。

リゾート地としての復活やインバウンド誘致、ビジネスチャンスの創出を妙高市は歓迎する一方で、開発のあり方をコントロールするための規制も検討しています。1980年代のリゾートブームで開発されたものの、日本全国で現在は廃墟となった場所も多く、同じ轍を踏まないよう望むところです。

私自身、リゾート地が最も活気のあった時代に湯沢・苗場・妙高で仕事をし、その後の凋落も目の当たりにしてきました。人によって理想とする開発の形は異なりますが、妙高の美しい風景を損なわない開発がなされることを願っています。

The winter in Daidohara, which spreads out at the foot of Mt. Myoko, does not see as much snow as Uonuma. On January 5th, when I took photos at this location at an altitude of about 500 meters, the temperature was -8 degrees Celsius, and the snow was powdery. The dimples visible on the snow surface indicate that there is still not much snow accumulation, but even so, there was about 2 meters of snow.

In the Myōkō region, foreign-owned resort development is underway with the aim of starting construction in the summer of 2026. The hot spring towns and ski resorts that thrived during the bubble economy have now returned to being quiet resort areas, but due to the excellent snow quality, the number of overseas visitors has been increasing in recent years. There has also been investment in Arai Mountain Resort, which has transferred its management rights from a Sony-affiliated company to Lotte.

While Myoko City welcomes the revival of the resort area, the attraction of inbound tourists, and the creation of business opportunities, it is also considering regulations to control the development process. Many places developed during the resort boom of the 1980s have now become ruins across Japan, and the city hopes to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Personally, I worked in Yuzawa, Naeba, and Myoko during the resort area’s most vibrant era and witnessed its subsequent decline. While ideal development models vary by individual, I hope that development in Myoko will be carried out in a way that does not compromise its beautiful landscape.
