Located slightly downstream from the confluence of the Shinano River and the Uono River, this spot offers a view of the Shinano River, surrounded by river terraces, which looks like a valley when viewed from above. The landscape around Ojiya and Kawaguchi, where the Shinano River and Uono River flow into the plains, is characterized by complex and three-dimensional terrain. The meandering Shinano River can also be seen from the high ground of the terraces.
As the name “Ojiya” suggests, this area has some of the most varied terrain in Niigata Prefecture, making it an ideal location for landscape photography. In addition to terraced rice fields, the Shinano River, the Uono River, mountains, fog, and snow, the flower fields in spring and summer and the fireworks at summer festivals also make for wonderful subjects.
The photography location is situated near the epicenter of the Chuetsu Earthquake, and the diverse terrain of the Shinano River basin may be related to the relatively high frequency of earthquakes in the area. Following the earthquake, Kawaguchi Town, which later merged with Nagaoka City, recorded a seismic intensity of 7.
