ヤマザクラの名山！

ネットや新聞、あるいは観光ガイドなどでも、米山が「花の名山」として紹介されているのを目にしたことはありません。しかし、以前から春になるたびにこの近くを通ると、新潟県内ではここが最も山桜が豊かに咲き誇る地域なのではないかと気になっていました。とはいえ、毎年花の咲き方は異なり、不作の年もあれば、満開の時期もずれるため、撮影に訪れてもすでに花が終わってしまっていたり、残雪の米山と桜を一緒に収めることができなかったりすることもありました。花全般に言えることですが、本当に一番良い時期は一瞬です。

この写真は10年以上前に撮影したものですが、今年（2025年）はまさに当たり年でした。この場所からは杉の黒々とした林が写り込まず、新緑が芽吹き始めた広葉樹の尾根を這い上がる桜と、ダイナミックな残雪の米山を組み合わせて撮影することができました。植樹されたソメイヨシノの並木ももちろん美しいですが、さまざまな桜の樹種が見られる山桜の春こそ、日本の春にふさわしいと感じます。淡いピンクや白いヤマザクラが終わると、今度は白い花房が豊かな緑の葉とともに咲き誇るウワミズザクラの季節がやってきます。

I have never seen Yoneyama Mountain described as a “mountain famous for its flowers” on the internet, in newspapers, or in tourist guides. However, every spring when I pass by this area, I have always wondered if this might be the region in Niigata Prefecture where mountain cherry blossoms bloom most abundantly. That said, the blooming patterns vary each year, with some years being poor and others seeing the peak blooming period shift, so there have been times when I visited for photography only to find the flowers already gone, or when I couldn’t capture both the snow-covered Mount Yama and the cherry blossoms together. As is true for flowers in general, the truly best time is fleeting.

This photo was taken over 10 years ago, but this year (2025) was a particularly good year. From this location, the dark cedar forest was not visible in the frame, and I was able to capture the cherry blossoms climbing up the ridge of broad-leaved trees just beginning to sprout new green leaves, combined with the dynamic snow-capped Mount Yone. While the rows of planted Somei Yoshino cherry trees are certainly beautiful, I feel that the spring of mountain cherry blossoms, where various cherry tree species can be seen, is truly befitting of Japanese spring. After the pale pink and white Yamazakura cherry blossoms fade, the season of Uwamizuzakura cherry blossoms arrives, with their white flower clusters blooming alongside lush green leaves.
