Makiki-yama is a fascinating mountain that you will want to climb again and again. You can climb it several times and discover something new each time. There are rich beech forests along the trail and a large pond near the summit. I have strong memories of skiing down the long stream in spring. The autumn leaves seen from the ridgeline are magnificent.
The Uonuma Plain is a basin through which the Uono River, a temporary tributary of the Shinano River, flows, and it is also a place where fog tends to form. On early winter mornings, the sight of the morning sun beginning to shine over Makiki-yama from behind the deep fog is a fantastic sight. Makiki-yama, located on the border with Gunma Prefecture, brings an abundance of water to Kanto and Niigata thanks to the large amount of snow that accumulates there in winter.
The photo was taken from near the pass on the Uonuma Hills that connects the former Koide Town and the former Horinouchi Town.
