写真は、その時々の自分自身を記録するものでもあります。もちろん、写真に対する考え方は人それぞれで、1枚の写真が記録と表現の両方に分かれることもあれば、両方の要素を兼ね備えている場合もあります。また、時間が経つにつれて、その写真の意義や価値も変化していくでしょう。ひとりの作者でも、記録として撮る場合もあれば、表現として撮る場合もあり、思いがけない評価を受けることもあります。

たとえば、海岸を一頭の馬が走っていたあの瞬間。私は反射的に数枚シャッターを切り、気がつけば馬は視界から消えていました。それはまるで夢や幻のような一瞬でした。たまたまその時、カメラにはタングステンフィルムが入っていたため、写真は青みがかった仕上がりになりました。記録として、その瞬間や時代を正確に伝えているかはわかりませんが、私にとっては長く心に残っている一枚です。

カメラの「一瞬を記録する」という特性から考えれば、タングステンフィルムで撮影したという事実も含めて記録と言えるでしょうし、夢や幻のような瞬間をイメージとして残してくれたという意味では、表現とも言えるかもしれません。この写真が50年後、100年後にどのように受け取られるのかは想像もつきません。

写真を撮るときには対象をよく観察するので、その時の状況を鮮明に覚えていることが多いのですが、この写真は、私にとって普段とは違った視点や考え方のきっかけを与えてくれる、いわば“アンチ写真”なのかもしれません。

A photograph is also a record of who you are at a given time. Of course, everyone has a different view of photography, and a single photograph may be both a record and an expression, or it may be a combination of both. The significance and value of a photograph will also change over time. Even a single author may take a photograph as a record or as an expression, and it may receive unexpected recognition.

For example, that moment when a horse was running along the beach. I reflexively snapped a few shutters, and before I knew it, the horse had disappeared from view. It was a moment like a dream or a vision. As it happened, the camera had tungsten film in it at the time, so the photo ended up with a bluish tint. As a record, I am not sure if it accurately conveys the moment or the era, but it is one that will remain with me for a long time.

Considering the camera’s characteristic of “recording a moment,” it could be called a record, including the fact that it was taken with tungsten film, and it could also be called an expression in the sense that it left us an image of a moment that was like a dream or a vision. It is hard to imagine how these photographs will be received 50 or 100 years from now.

When I take a photograph, I observe the subject very carefully and often remember the situation vividly, but this photograph may be an “anti-photograph,” so to speak, as it gives me a chance to look at and think about things differently than I normally do.
