まるで珊瑚の海のような

合併前は山北町に属していた笹川流れは、「新潟県で最も美しい岩場の海岸」として知られています。明るく赤みを帯びた花崗岩の地質により、砂浜と澄んだブルーの海が織りなす景観は格別ですが、柏崎の鯨波や上越の谷浜、旧西山町の石地海岸などと比べると、かつてはあまり知られていませんでした。

この素晴らしい海岸を多くの人に知ってもらいたいと思い、出版社に提案してガイドブックを制作してもらったことがあります。県内のすべての海岸を撮影しましたが、特に笹川流れの美しい海を紹介することに力を入れました。その甲斐もあってか、数年後には関東方面から訪れる車が増えたように感じます。

山と海に挟まれた狭いルートの海岸線なので、アクセスの点から見逃されていたのかもしれません。近年はコロナ禍の影響で全国的に海水浴客が減少していますが、リゾート地のような風景と澄んだ海を眺めながら、海岸でゆったりと過ごすには最高の場所です。

Before the merger, Sasagawa Nagare belonged to Yamakita Town and is known as “the most beautiful rocky coastline in Niigata Prefecture.” The bright reddish granite geology creates a unique landscape of sandy beaches and clear blue sea, but compared to Kashiwazaki’s Kujira-nami, Joetsu’s Tanihama, and the former Nishiyama Town’s Ishiji Coast, it was not well known in the past.

With the aim of introducing this wonderful coastline to more people, I once proposed to a publisher to create a guidebook. While photographing all the coastlines within the prefecture, I particularly focused on showcasing the beauty of Sasagawa Nagare’s sea. Thanks to these efforts, I noticed an increase in the number of visitors from the Kanto region a few years later.

Perhaps because it is a narrow coastal route sandwiched between mountains and the sea, it may have been overlooked in terms of accessibility. In recent years, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of beachgoers has decreased nationwide. However, it remains an ideal place to relax on the coast while enjoying the scenic views reminiscent of a resort area and the clear sea.
